Chapter eleven

Escape Plans

Harriet was in no mood for excuses. She turned back to the Boy Scout book. She reread the page about broken arms. The instructions talked about a sling made from a neat square of linen. Harriet thought about what she could use instead. Her cardigan would have to do. She pulled it out from the bottom of her satchel. With it came her clean socks, underwear and the coin Susan had given her. Colour rushed to Harriet’s cheeks. She picked up the spilled objects as quickly as she could and hoped Erik hadn’t seen them. She stuffed her clothes back into the satchel, carefully placing the coin in an outside pocket of the bag.

“What’s that?”

“I’m making a sling.”

“I know that. What did you put in your bag?”

“Nothing.”

“I saw you. You had a coin. Let me see it.”

“If you know what it is, why did you ask? It was a gift, a good luck charm.”

The two eyed each other suspiciously. Harriet feared Erik had decided she was the thief. Just like her, he was looking for evidence. If that was true, he couldn’t be part of the gang. If he was looking for the criminal, it was possible he wasn’t guilty. She busied herself folding and refolding her cardigan as she tried to sort the evidence in her mind.

Erik said he’d watched her climb from her window, steal his boat and row to the far side of the lake with a satchel over her shoulder. From Erik’s point of view, she must look guilty. Now, she had to keep him with her until she could prove her innocence, or he’d use Mr. Milton’s boat with its outboard motor to head home and tell the police what he’d seen.

Harriet strapped Erik’s arm into the sling, picked up his bag, and placed it, with her satchel, over one shoulder. She offered a hand, but Erik refused her help. He clambered to his feet and spat out Susan’s herbal medicine. Harriet couldn’t blame him. She remembered how bitter the herb ball tasted. She hoped it had done its job, as she couldn’t afford to have him fall unconscious again. They had to get through this together so she could prove her innocence to Erik, her family and the town of Loughlin.

Harriet led the way towards the beach, down the overgrown path created by the landslide. Erik walked slowly. He looked unsteady on his feet and was clearly relieved to sit on the wet sand when they reached the three boats. Thick fog clung to the lake. They had time before a search party found them. No one would set out with such poor visibility, and the boats told Harriet the thieves were still nearby.

Harriet turned to see if she could read Erik’s facial expressions and discover the truth. Erik was busy opening his bag with one hand. He pulled out two red flags.

“These are no good. The fog is too thick. No one can see us.”

Erik also took out a map and compass.
